  1. I did not know that a vulture awareness day existed. Interesting. I don't remember exactly where it is, but somewhere in India, I think, is an area where the local people -- or members of a religion in that area -- put the bodies of dead human beings out in a certain place for the vultures. The birds remove the flesh from the bodies. But a problem arose: The number of vultures was declining. I don't know or remember why. Vultures do have an important role, definitely. The woman giving a talk at the Oregon Aquarium said that turkey vultures -- and all vultures -- help get rid of decaying carcasses before they become poisonous and a threat to other creatures that might eat them later. We should not look down on vultures. They have a job to do.

    2. I found a story that provides the answer. The Parsi people of India, who came to India about 1,000 years ago from Persia (Iran), are indeed Zoroastrians. They brought that religion with them. Zoroastrians don't want to bury their dead because they believe that that contaminates the Earth. So, in this one area in India, vultures speeded up the job, but they disappeared. They died off from eating corpses of cattle that had been fed a certain medication. The link: http://www.npr.org/2012/09/05/160401322/vanishing-vultures-a-grave-matter-for-indias-parsis
