birds of prey

the perigrine falcon has a top speed of 256 mph. perigrine falcons wingspan is 74-120 centimeters. the saker falcons name comes from the arabic word for falcon. the saker falcon is larger than the lanner falcon which is a medium sized bird. the red tailed hawk is from a family called chickenhawk. red tailed hawks are the most common hawk for falconry. bald eagles almost went extinct from the 40s to 60s. in a couple of north american cultures bald eagles are considerd sacred birds. panama's national bird is the harpy eagle. the way you can tell something is a harpy eagle is that it's upperside has black feathers it's underside has white feathers! there about 425 california condors in captivity and in the wild combined! in some native american myths california condors are sacred but in others they are evil! turkey vultures are sometimes called turkey buzzards! turkey vulture population is very big the number is 4,500,000!!!!!!!!!

  1. That is so cool. When we were at the Grand Canyon last Spring, I kept looking for condors because they said there were two or three in the area, but I only saw black vultures,

  3. The Oregon Zoo in Portland helps increase the condor population. It has condor adults and the zoo keeps them and new chicks safe. When the chicks are young adults, they are released into their native habitat. The zoo works with a condor organization. It doesn't do this just on its own. The birds are not on display, I think. The zoo wants them to be as natural as possible and keeps them in a situation where they do not directly engage with human beings. Or so I understand.

  4. I am glad that you are including birds in your blog. They are my favorite species--except for humans of course, oh and cats and dogs too.
